This ‘something’ is the other part of their mind, the subconscious/unconscious. Because people can’t impact this unconscious aspect of their mind, they do one or more things: they make up reasonable explanations for their behaviour; justify why what they did was their best or only option; they justify why it would be too hard to change it; they shift the blame for the unsatisfactory outcome onto other people, circumstances or bad luck; they pretend that what they wanted wasn’t really that important to them.
