Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)What is it?
Intractable ProblemsSometimes it can seem like you have an intractable problem, one which doesn’t shift no matter what you do. It will often show itself in an expected rush of emotion, far beyond what a situation deserves, or in a thought which endlessly repeats itself without resolving, or in a pattern of behaviour which you are unable to stop even though you know it is not in your best interests to continue. Your Conscious MindYour conscious mind is unable to understand what is happening and so can do nothing to make a change - logic and reason do not seem to make any difference. The Nervous SystemHowever, it is possible to disrupt patterns of thought and behaviour by direct stimulation of the nervous system. EFT How does it work? The Emotional Freedom Technique uses specific points on the body’s energy meridian lines (as also used for acupuncture). By rhythmic tapping on these in a specific sequence while holding an image in the mind, experiencing an emotion or repeating a troubling phrase out loud, it is possible to interfere with the body’s ability to recognise and respond to that particular image, emotion or phrase in the same way in the future. Breaking The PatternThe pattern will have been broken and cannot return with the same intensity. Another way to think of it is like jamming an inappropriate radio signal so that it can no longer be heard. It may be necessary to do several rounds of tapping for the ‘interference’ to fully ‘jam’ the signal. MeasuringThe IntensityAn initial subjective measure of the intensity of the problem is taken, and further measures after each round, until the client is happy that the problem has been eliminated, or at least minimised. Sometimes the mind becomes freed to follow threads of thought and association back to other images, emotions or phrases which are relevant to the specific problem being worked on, or other related issues. Moving OnThe client simply moves from one to the next as they come into awareness. It is not always required to do a full round of tapping on each thing which comes up, although this can also happen. How We Use The Emotional Freedom TechniqueWe have found the Emotional Freedom Technique to be an extremely useful addition to the range of tools which we use to help our clients. We use it in combination with hypnotherapy and hypnoanalysis to help clients have more access to their emotions, needs and inner dynamics. We sometimes use it to help people with relief of physical symptoms, or to help with entrenched habits such as smoking or overeating. Training Others to Use EFTWe also train our clients to be able to use EFT for themselves, as a resource they can call on at need in the future. Sometimes people will find when using it for themselves that their subjective measurement remains the same or only changes very slowly. In these cases we ask them to make a note of that particular issue and work with it again with our assistance during their next session. There is a skill in using EFT for forensic purposes, and it helps to have our positive focus to move things on. Other Forms of ‘Tapping’The Emotional Freedom Technique is a simplified and generalised form of tapping derived from the original more specific and complex Thought Field Therapy (TFT). There are also several other systems which use forms of ‘tapping’ to help shift stuck energy and emotions. Whilst they all appear similar, they do differ in some of the details, including how they are applied and some of the points used to tap on.
We have found the Emotional Freedom Technique to be both effective and easy to train.
